What is Payroll Giving?

Payroll Giving (also known as ‘Give As You Earn’) is a scheme maintained by HM Customs & Revenue (HMRC) enabling employees to make tax-free donations direct from their salary to Laughter Africa. This means that money that would have gone to the Inland Revenue instead goes directly to Laughter Africa: every £1 you donate will cost you 80p; if you are a higher rate tax payer every £1 will cost you just 60p (the taxman pays the rest). That is why a £10 payroll gift only costs £8 for people who pay 20% tax, and only £6 for people that pay 40% tax! For further information please visit the Inland Revenue website.

How do you sign up for payroll giving?

To sign up for payroll giving please check with the payroll department of your company to make sure your employer has a payroll giving scheme in place. If your company does have a scheme you can make a donation to Laughter Africa by authorising your employer to deduct a set amount from your salary. Your employer then hands over your gift to a government approved Payroll Giving Agency who in turn pass the money on to us. Your payroll department will sort everything out for you – you will not have to make any arrangements yourself.

If your employer does not already have a payroll giving scheme in place, don’t worry – it’s quick and simple to set up as well as cost-free. All modern payroll systems can handle payroll giving. If your employer doesn’t currently have a scheme in operation you could ask them to contact one of the three main HMRC recognised payroll giving agencies for charities for advice:

Alternatively you can click below and fill out the payroll giving form and ‘Payroll Giving in Action’ will contact your payroll department and sort everything out for you instead:

If you have any questions about any aspect of completing this form, please call the Payroll Giving in Action helpline on 01271 326131 or email enquiry@payrollgiving.co.uk.

Please note that you can change the amount you give or stop donating at any time. However, if you change your job and want to carry on donating to Laughter Africa straight from your salary you will need to set up a new regular gift with your new employers.

If you wish to find out more about payroll giving or have any other questions then please email info@laughterafrica.org.uk and we’ll do our best to help!
